In the 1991–92 season, Torino FC enjoyed a strong campaign both domestically and in Europe. Under coach Emiliano Mondonico, they finished third in Serie A, securing a UEFA Cup spot, and made a memorable run to the UEFA Cup Final, where they narrowly lost to Ajax on away goals after a 2–2 aggregate draw. The following season, 1992–93, proved more challenging; Torino slipped to ninth in Serie A and exited the UEFA Cup in the second round. However, they found redemption in the Coppa Italia, capturing the trophy by defeating Roma in the final on away goals, marking their fifth Coppa Italia title.
