Between 1991 and 1994, the Scotland national football team experienced a transitional period marked by managerial changes and mixed results. Under the guidance of Andy Roxburgh until 1993 and then Craig Brown, Scotland successfully qualified for UEFA Euro 1992 in Sweden, where they delivered a respectable performance but were eliminated in the group stage despite a win over the CIS (formerly the Soviet Union). The team struggled during the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, ultimately failing to qualify after finishing fourth in their group behind Italy, Switzerland, and Portugal. This period reflected both the waning of an earlier era and the groundwork for a more consistent presence in major tournaments under Brown's later leadership.
