The 2013–14 season marked Peterborough United's return to League One following relegation from the Championship. Under manager Darren Ferguson, the team enjoyed a strong start, winning 11 of their first 13 matches. Britt Assombalonga was a standout performer, scoring 23 league goals and 33 in all competitions, making him the club's top scorer. Despite this, the team's form dipped mid-season, leading to a 6th-place finish in the league. In the play-offs, they were narrowly defeated 3–2 on aggregate by Leyton Orient in the semi-finals. However, the season was partially redeemed by a 3–1 victory over Chesterfield in the Football League Trophy final at Wembley, securing the club's first major cup win.
