Elano joined Manchester City from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2007 for around £8 million and quickly became a fan favourite as an elegant attacking midfielder praised for his free kicks, penalties, and technical flair. Over two Premier League seasons he made 62 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists. His debut campaign under Sven‑Göran Eriksson in 2007–08 proved his most productive, helping City begin their transition from mid-table to Premier League contender. However, under Mark Hughes in 2008–09 his form dipped, leading to fewer minutes and ultimately his transfer to Galatasaray in July 2009, after tallying 18 goals in 80 appearances in all competitions.
