Between 1986 and 1991, the Italy national football team underwent a period of significant renewal and resurgence. After a disappointing exit in the Round of 16 at the 1986 World Cup, legendary coach Enzo Bearzot stepped down and was succeeded by Azeglio Vicini. Vicini focused on blending experienced players with emerging young talents like Roberto Baggio, Gianluca Vialli, and Paolo Maldini. This approach paid off as Italy reached the semifinals of UEFA Euro 1988, showcasing a more dynamic and technically gifted side. The team's development culminated in a strong performance at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, hosted on home soil, where they played with flair and defensive solidity, eventually finishing third after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Argentina in the semifinals.
