Between 1986 and 1988, the Italy national football team experienced a transitional phase following their disappointing performance at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by France. This led to the resignation of manager Enzo Bearzot, who had famously led Italy to World Cup victory in 1982. Azeglio Vicini was appointed as the new head coach, and he began the process of rejuvenating the squad by introducing a new generation of players, including future stars like Roberto Mancini and Gianluca Vialli. Under Vicini's leadership, Italy began to show signs of promise, setting the stage for their strong showing at the upcoming Euro 1988 tournament.
