The 2016–17 season marked Aston Villa's first campaign back in the Championship following relegation from the Premier League after 28 years in the top flight. Under new ownership led by Dr. Tony Xia and with Roberto Di Matteo appointed as manager, hopes were high for an immediate return, but poor form led to Di Matteo’s dismissal in October. Steve Bruce took over and steadied the team, but inconsistency plagued the squad throughout the season. Despite a few promising spells, Villa finished 13th, well short of promotion ambitions.
